Zagreb - Cvjetni Trg

These are Ana’s friends impressions on this first “field” action by Ana Rukavina Foundation:
Yesterday we set up a stand at Cvjetni Trg, where people could give their blood samples for standardization. We thought we’d have maximum of fifty donors. But there were more than 2 hundred of them! Generous people threw money into our piggy bank, as much as they could afford. There were little girls running around and throwing a kuna or two into our coin box with frozen little fingers. There were people who opened their wallets and threw in everything they had. This was done both by young and wealthy people, and by our beloved retired old people, who threw in money despite their modest means. A gentleman, obviously homeless, gave money too, and he said: “This is important. I don’t have much, but I want to be a part of it”, and he moved his portable home onwards. I was so touched I cried five times that day. Iva, a girl who organized an auction in Macao club on December 20th, was beside me. From time to time we would look at each other and say: “This is so marvellous!” People came to us and said: “You know, kids, what you do is important. Keep doing the good work.” Our colleague Tonči came with his little girl who was wearing a pink coat. They came before the show for dads and daughters that was organized for the holiday. The girl “turned him in” to Santa Claus in front of two hundred dads and kids, saying he was “mean” because he read newspapers all the time. A father is just that to his kid – a father. The part about him being a journalist, and reading newspapers a part of his job, well, they skip that part. I am telling you this because we all tend to forget that people around us have many functions – they are someone’s son, father, brother, colleague, school friend, someone’s husband, ex boyfriend, cousin, fellow citizen... Dear friends, if you could only see our fellow citizens yesterday! They stood in a row in cold to give their blood sample for standardization. They stood in a row. Some of them stood there for twenty minutes. We were there, sharing our informative flyers, and looking at them in wonder. And joy. I cannot tell you how touched we were with those loving people, friends, mothers, and citizens. Our dear actors shared our flyers with their noses and fingers frozen; they shared them all over he centre, took pictures with people, gave autographs, gave blood for standardization… I don’t know if I could ever describe it properly. Our friend Lana, who organized gathering with the actors on our main square, ran around like crazy (if you knew her, you’d know it’s common)… and we ran after her because she didn’t want to button her grey little coat because she was “so hot, so hot”. Then finally our colleague, Mr. Ivo, got her to have tea with him, which was great because none of us succeeded. And we were happy to see her red cheeks. The actors were wonderful, they were just great. They were shot by different reporters, so you’ll probably be able to see them in the newspapers. Martina from Millenium Promotion came too. They did our PR free of charge, and Martina helped us organize. Our dear friends from Caritas gave us three pine trees for the first three donors. Everybody was just great. I gave a blood sample too, and now I am registered. It doesn’t hurt one bit, and it’s all over in 2 minutes. Our friend Nataša came, with her belly, and her husband. Mrs. Jadranka came with her daughter and nephew. Mr. Tome came with his son and daughter in law, and their baby and daughter. Marijana was there too, our colleague from Vjesnik, with a pony tail on top of her head. Our Medo was there, whirling around as usual. Everybody came. We were overwhelmed with joy when we called Mr. Mrsić, who was away on business and couldn’t be there, and we shared our joy with him over the phone. Lovely ladies from Rebro hospital worked hard that Saturday. There were more than two hundred donors on Cvjetni Trg that day. Happy day!
