In the period from July 16th to August 16th 2010, 1000 new potential donor samples of bone marrow and stem cells have been tissue typed using the DNK method for HLA (HLA - Human leukocyte antigen) A, B and DRB1!

700 new donor blood samples have been tissue typed. The Registry now lists 15,875 HLA tissue typed donors which are able to be searched for genetic compatibility and tissue tolerance between the donor and the patient who is awaiting bone marrow transplantation for treatment.

For the first time, the life of a patient in Croatia has been saved by way of a successful stem cell transplantation from a donor found in the Croatian Registry of voluntary bone marrow donors. Blood samples that were stored in the domestic Registry have helped Croatian patients suffering from leukemia, thereby fulfilling the mission of the Ana Rukavina Foundation.

At the 172nd action to join the Registry of voluntary bone marrow and stem cell donors that was held today at the Community Center Kino Mosor, Mr. Ivan Berc, a member of the Snoopy Gadafi Darts Club, was listed as the 33,000th potential bone marrow donor.

A member of the Foundation’s Executive Board, Lana Šarić, herself a former leukemia patient, has directed her first documentary: "Klasa Optimist". The film deals with the way patients face the potentially lethal disease and everything that happens to them after treatment.

Jasenko Houra, the frontman of the band Prljavo Kazalište and the author of a number of songs that have marked the last few decades, has decided to hand over all of the royalties he receives for his performances and the publication of his songs “Mojoj Majci” (Ruža hrvatska (Croatian Rose)), “Crno-bijeli svijet” (Black and White World), “Sretno dijete” (Happy Child), “S vremena na vrijeme” (From Time to Time) and “Heroj ulice” (Hero of the Streets) to the Ana Rukavina Foundation during the period from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2013.

February 15, 2010 is the International Day of Children Suffering from Malignant Diseases. More than 180 children are diagnosed with some type of malignant disease in the Republic of Croatia every year. Out of every three sick children, two will be cured.

We have already written on our web site about the young pupils at Remete Primary School who decided to give up one ice cream every month and donate that money to the Foundation instead. Their noble gesture continues and has gone a step further. This year they have been joined by the 3rd grade class and their teacher Sanja Varga!
